We have found that romantic comedies all contain varying degrees of the same characteristics. How these characteristics are developed in a movie lead to the enjoyability of the movie as well as the believability of the relationships within it.
We have found that romcoms always contain elements of the unreal. Unbelievability isn't a bad thing; in fact, we believe it helps provide the audience with an escape from reality to create a pleasurable viewing experience. UNLESS it goes a little bit too far . . .
In every romcom there is at least one major conflict the romantic interests have to surmount in order to be together. If there isn't, how does the viewer know they really love each other and belong together?
How do the actors play off of one another? Do they have a good repertoire? Is the physical chemistry good?
When does each major player in the relationship fall in love with the other one? Sometimes this can happen off-screen or before the movie begins.
Does the audience believe that the couple will stay together forever? Why or why not? Sometimes the answer to this has to do with the characters and where they are in life and other times this could have to do with how the relationship was developed by movie personnel.
Every movie has a scene that pops into your head when you think about it or something you could envision being on a movie poster as an advertisement.
